Formula
Payout = Stake × Decimal Odds
Margin = (1 / Over Odds) + (1 / Under Odds) − 1
Lines ending in .5 cannot push. Lines on whole numbers (2.0, 47.0) push if the total lands exactly on the line — the stake is returned.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are over/under bets?
Over/under (also called totals) bets ride on whether the combined score, goals or points in a game finishes higher (over) or lower (under) than a posted line. Lines like 2.5 (soccer) or 47.5 (NFL) are the go-to; the .5 guarantees no push.
What happens if the score lands right on the line?
If the line is a whole number (e.g., 2.0) and the total matches it exactly, the bet pushes — your stake comes back with no profit. Half-point lines (.5) sidestep this completely. Quarter lines (.25, .75) split your stake, so half pushes and half wins or loses.
Why do over/under odds tend to sit near -110?
Bookmakers tune the line to pull in roughly even action on both sides. The -110 odds (1.91 decimal) bake in the standard 4.5-5% bookmaker margin. Sharp books may post -105 or even -102 on top markets.
How do I spot value in totals?
Stack the bookmaker’s line against a model — Poisson for soccer, points-per-possession for basketball. If your projection clears the line by more than the margin, that can flag value. Always shop multiple books for the best line and odds.
